Digitonal - The Centre Cannot Hold

Tra i dischi che fareste bene a prenotare con largo anticipo prima della data d'uscita vogliamo segnalarvi l'atteso ritorno di Digitonal, interessante ensemble composta da Andy Dobson (tastiere e programming), Callum Macmillian (batteria) e Sami Bishai (violini), dopo l'acclamato debutto nel 2002 su Toytronic (23 things fall apart). The Centre Cannot Hold (la data di realizzazione e' stata fissata al 15 agosto) e' in realta' un disco-pilota o pre-release che dir si voglia, dato che l'album e' in fase di ultimazione (l'uscita e' prevista per la fine del 2005).

Molto piu' oscuro ed elementale del debutto, questo ep racchiude una riflessione melanconica sulle vicende personali di ciascun membro della banda. La cornice del loro stile e' affidata ad una delle voce piu' ammalianti ed eteree in circolazione, quella di Kirsty Hawkshaw(chi si ricorda degli Opus III, ma soprattutto di Halcyon degli Orbital... ebbene quella voce campionata era della talentuosa Kirsty...). A proposito marchiata dall'ugola di Kirsty, ascoltando le prime sequenze di Maris Stella, sembra di riascoltare Ether, song da far accapponare la pelle firmata Opus III! Poi pero' l'imprinting Digitonal emerge. Eccome! Fondono musica classica all'elettronica come pochi hanno mostrato di saper fare, nonostante a volte non rifuggano -scelta voluta o imposta?- da certi clichès, i Digitonal hanno meritato di calcare palchi importanti: da festival quali il Mor o il Big Chill, a spettacoli al South Bank National Theatre, passando per il Festival Internazionale di Musica Classica di Cheltenham, il British Arts Council Selector Showcase e altre tappe nel Regno Unito, in Europa e piu' recentemente a New York e San Francisco, nonche' numerose comparsate in show radiofonici e spot televisivi. Sul piano simbolico, ricordano da vicino alcune formazioni tedesche di qualche anno fa ruotanti attorno ad etichette quali la Projekt, su quello stilistico ed esecutivo possono far venire in mente compositori quali Max Richter o gli stranoti Sigur Ros. Tracce come Cantus V o la gia' citata Maris Stella riescono a far vibrare corde emotive almeno quanto Sami fa vibrare quelle del suo violino, risultando toccante e coinvolgente. Consigliatissimo.
