Pare che in Germania vada consolidandosi una nuova estetica musicale che amalgama passato e futuro nelle forme di un algido avant-pop intimista. Un generale consenso di critica e pubblico hanno riscosso su questo fronte i Notwist col loro ultimo "Neon Golden", ma non si capisce perchè (tranne forse per via di un minore appeal commerciale) un simile riconoscimento non abbia investito i Tarwater e il loro quarto lavoro.

Il duo, composto da Ronald Lippok, costola degli sperimentatori To Rococo Rot, e da Bernd Jestram, fonde molto accuratamente elettronica minimale, istanze acustiche e melodie larvali. "Dwellers on the Threshold" si svolge con ritmi lenti, suggestioni glitch, scandito per lo più dai semplici arpeggi o picking di chitarra acustica ripetuti ("Perfect Shadow"). Sezioni di archi sintetici ampliano il respiro di questa specie di futuribile folk metropolitano ("1985", "Diver", "Metal Flakes"). Le vocals si piegano anch'esse al gioco della iterazione, sfiorando il parlato in un ibrido tra Ian Caple (Tindersticks) e Laurie Anderson ("Miracle of Love", la monodia blipposa di "Tesla", l'ipnosi sublime di "Now", forse il pezzo migliore). Non mancano escursioni extra-continentali: percussioni afro su tappetino di synth in "Phin" e l'orientaleggiante mantra electro-acustico di "Dogs and Light Tents". Non può ritenersi certo un disco che coinvolge immediatamente, ma per chi intenda addentrarsi in panorami digital-esistenziali non riuscirà proprio a non affezioonarsi al sound del duo di strambi intellettualoidi... I TarWater: simpatico l'accostamento fra due stati della materia.
