Una nuova bollente manciata di tracce da casa Aquasky, qui in uno schizofrenico sdoppiamento di vinili su entrambe le loro principali label (o sottolabel), Sonix e Incident.
Il vinile Sonix risulta il più orientato, nell'ambito dell'accoppiata, su sonorità techstep, mentre il singolo su Incident si stempera su coordinate più calde e solari.
"Generation X" è un denso roller che apre su un sognante intro, su cui una dilatata voce femminile declina la frase che dà il titolo al brano, per poi irrompere incalzante con una bassline mentale che continua a cangiare inseguendo i beats fluidi, disegnando spirali acide e ipnotiche su cui affiorano, qua e là, ritagli del sample vocale principale.
Il retro "Haze", invece, pur giocando anch'esso su un narcotico campione di vocals femminili, sposta lievemente le sonorità, introducendo una ritmica schiacciasassi che, pur già intravedibile nell'intro notturno, esplode pienamente nella partenza vera e propria del brano, con un drumming fluido e imponente e una figura di basso gommosa e esasperatamente gonfia di frequenze sub, su cui, ad un certo punto, interviene, in contrapposizione, un acido lead filtrato a dovere.
Il singolo Incident, come si accennava precedentemente, si svolge su panorami certamente più prossimi ad inflessioni funk, come d'altronde ci si può anche aspettare dalla presenza del remix di Calibre presente sul lato B.
"Baby it's you!" è un caldo e rimbalzante funk-step, ricco di campioni vocali femminili mai troppo esasperati, con synth notevolmente più levigati e luccicanti del solito, e si spinge su una drum & bass frastagliato eppure fluido nel suo crescere, facendo affiorare campioni di chiaro stampo funk e soul senza mai appesantire troppo di saccarina negli arrangiamenti.
A chiudere, il remix ad opera di Calibre di "Do anything", un restyling che non cambia di molto le caratteristiche del brano originale, sebbene nessuno possa negare che il drum breaks sia decisamente nel più puro Calibre style.
Due ottimi vinili, ed entrambi presentano diverse sfumature di gusto nell'interpretare il basso-e-batteria in una visione comunque personale: inoltre, presentano due flipside decisamente riuscite ("Haze", a mio giudizio, è impeccabile), rendendo la coppia di 12" un acquisto molto appetibile, praticamente inevitabile...

A new hot handful of tracks under Aquasky signature, here in a schizophrenic double release of vinyl singles on both their main labels (or sub labels), Sonix and Incident.
The Sonix vinyl results, between the couple, as the more oriented towards the techstep sound, while the Incident single waters down on more solar and warm trajectories.
"Generation X" is a dense roller that opens on a dreamy intro, on which a dilated female voice declines the sentence that tiles the track, to break into pressing on, with a mental bassline morphing on the fluid beats, drawing acid and hypnotic spirals on which, here and there, snippets of the main vocal sample emerge.
The flipside, "Haze", instead, though still playing itself on a narcotic sample of female vocals, slightly moves with the sounds, introducing a bulldozer rhythm that, though still it can be foreseen in the night-painted intro, bursts out fully in the real start of the track, with a fluid and imposing drumming and a gummy bassline dramatically pumped on the sub frequencies, on which, at a certain point, an acid and filtered-as-needed lead interferes as opposition.
The Incident single, as mentioned some lines ago, floats on different landscapes, certainly nearer to funk inflections, as, on the other side, we can expect, finding a Calibre remix on the flipside.
"Baby it's you!" is a warm and bouncy funk-step, rich of female vocals that never sound too obsessive, with synths clearly smoother and more glittering g than usual, and moves on a frenetic and still liquid drum'n'bass, lighting up clearly funk&soul-injected samples, while, anyway, never loading too much with saccharine on the arrangements.
As last track, the Calibre's remix of "Do anything", a restyling work that doesn't change much the original track's characteristics, although nobody can deny the fact that the drum breaks are definitely in the purest Calibre style.
Two very good pieces of vinyl, and both shows different nuances of tastes, interpreting drum'n'bass under an always personal view: as bonus, they both show up with tasty flipsides ("Haze", in the writer's judgement, is faultless...), making this couple of 12" a very adviced, if not unavoidable, purchase.
